BIMA began in 1995 as the Bellingham Internet Music Archive, the award-winning web site created by local guitarist David Weiss , to showcase and promote local talent and help unite local musicians. Since then BIMA has been increasingly successful in building community awareness and uniting artists. Click here to read David's story on the beginnings of BIMA.

Continuing in the cooperative spirit of the web site, David also began to gather local musicians' CDs to sell along side his Finger Noise CD at the Bellingham Farmer's Market . The Market has become BIMA's physical location for promotion of local music every Saturday during the months of April through October. In addition, BIMA began to bring its ever-expanding display of local recordings to community holiday markets during the months of November and December.

In March of 2000, BIMA launched its first CD Compilation project, using mp3 files of 14 artists and creating two sampler CDs on mp3.com . As the community of musicians grew and developed, a desire for an official membership association became more and more apparent. The Bellingham Independent Music Association filed incorporation status with Washington State Secretary of State as of May 4, 2000.

After six weeks of committee work via email, BIMA had its first board meeting on June 15, adopting bylaws and electing our board. Allied Arts approved our affiliation status in June 2000, so that tax deductible contributions could be possible and benefit both organizations.

In November of 2000, BIMA expanded its member CD sales program into a permanent display at the Community Food Coop. Since then other stores have been added to the wholesale progam, including Everybody's Store in Van Zandt, the Ferndale Drug Store, and Goodwin Station in Fairhaven. BIMA has grossed approximately $15,000 in CD sales over the past 3 years, with approximately $13,000 returned to the artists on consignment.

Two educational workshops were hosted by BIMA for local musicians in 2001. Chris Knab of Four Front Media & Music was guest speaker and shared tips for local artists.

BIMA partnered with RE Sources in 2002 with the release of a CD Compiliation Voices of the Water, to benefit the North Sound Baykeeper Program of RE Sources. Twelve artists donated their songs for this benefit and a release party was celebrated in December.

In February 2003, BIMA had its first ever Visioning Meeting for its members.  As a result, two new programs were underway by that Fall: Monthly Networking Meetings for musicians featuring speakers and panels on topics related to the various aspects of promoting and marketing music, and BIMA Artists' Community Grants, a program to provide funding for events that serve our community and feature local musicians.  In addition, the eight year old web site received a major face-lift.

BIMA is currently in an expansion phase, and welcomes the ideas and energies of community members as we launch more projects to build awareness and support of local music in our community.
